Understanding Your Pom's Bark

Understanding Your Pom's Bark

A Pomeranian's bark is their voice.  It is the way in which your dog will ask for something or warn you if he feels something may be a potential threat.

Learn why your Pom barks so that you can properly fix the issue.

Pomeranian's are excellent learners.  They aim to please their owner.  Training your Pomeranian to stop barking when it is not wanted, will require some time and patience from you.  Your Pom is already primed to learn any barking rules.

Why Your Pomeranian Barks

Protecting You:

Why does a Pomeranian bark? It may surprise you. Don't let their size fool you! Because they are weary of strangers,  Pomeranians make  excellent watchdogs and you will hear your this barking to alert you to anything unusual. Pomeranians are very alert to what is happening and this dog is very alert to his or her surroundings. Believing they are much larger than they are, a Pomeranian will bark to protect the people they love. As with any dog, you may wish to understand the different reasons why your dog barks and then you can begin to take steps to stop the barking.

Self Protection:
One reason why a Pomeranian barks is self protection.   A Pomeranian may also guard their toys and food bowls. Make your Pomeranian feel safe and secure that no one is going to take their food and toys.  Put their dish in a quiet corner and do not bother your dog while they eat.  Do not allow people to rush around the dog or yell while the dog is eating.  If your Pomeranian sees or hears loud commotions while eating, they may feel they are in a rush.  Each meal should be a peaceful event.
Boredom:

Another reason why a Pomeranian barks is boredom.  Poms may bark incessantly if they are not socialized at a young age and if they are not supplied with a variety of dog toys.  Giving your Pom lots of different toys is not spoiling them.  This is the best method to stop Pomeranian barking is to have a variety of different.  You should try to search around for interesting toys that are interactive and fun. You should give your Pomeranian more than those boring standard chew toys.  Your Pom is like a child.  He or she needs stimulation from exercise, playing and time spent the adult who loves them.

Excitement:

The reason why your Pomeranian barks may be excitement. Dogs will get overly excited when you arrive home and this can lead to crazy barking and even accidental elimination or urination.  Even a Pomeranian that is house trained may exhibit excitement urination when greeting you.  It usually occurs in puppies and your Pomeranian is not probably not even aware that he is urinating.  As your puppy matures and develops bladder control, the problem will usually disappear.  Your Pomeranian is so excited to see you, he or she will bark up a storm.

When You Come Home:

Sometimes, barking is worst right as you pull up to your home and get ready to enter through the door. The best treatment for this is to prevent your Pom from becoming overly excited; you can do this by exposing your dog to the stimulus that excites him, over and over until it no longer excites him.  When you get home, it will be difficult, but ignore him for several minutes. Don't even look at him. Then leave again for a few minutes, return and ignore, leave, return and ignore. Keep doing this until you can see that your dog is not only unexcited, but is actually getting bored with the whole thing.  When your dog has calmed down and is no longer excited when you come in, then very quietly and gently say hello. If any signs of excitement or urinating appear, quickly exit and repeat the coming-and-going routine.

Fix Their Boredom:

Addressing their boredom can help sometimes. Giving your Pomeranian a toy will not be seen as rewarding their behavior.  Pomeranians are active little dogs; they need stimulation.  If you only give your Pomeranian simple toys, you will soon find out that they bore easily.  A Pomeranian needs fun and interesting toys to keep them happy. If you can, it is a good idea to give a Pomeranian a new toy about once a month and think variety: toys that make noise, toys that are interactive, colorful toys (yes, dogs can see colors) and toys that can be put in the freezer to make cold- a wonderful treat on a hot day.

Night Time Barking

Your Pomeranian, as with any dog,  must learn that barking for your attention doesn't work.  Repeat the word "Quiet" , clearly once or twice in a normal voice and then ignore him. Yes, it may seem mean at first, but in the long run it will produce a better relationship between you and your Pomeranian, trust us.  Make sure your Pomeranian has plenty of water, a treat or two and some toys that he can reach if he refuses to sleep.  After ignoring his attention-getting behavior for a short while, he will learn to mimic you: he will sleep when you do.  Ignoring dogs we love is not always easy, but if done for training methods, it is temporary and will lead to a long life together with peace and happiness.

Barking at Sirens

Does your Pomeranian bark at sirens? This is called Disturbance barking. If you think that their barking disturbs you, please remember that in this case your Pomeranian is barking because they are being highly disturbed!   Since a dog's hearing is so sensitive, when your Pomeranian hears any type of siren this can actually cause severe aggravation and unrest. Imagine if without warning, someone blew a whistle right into your ear and continued doing it for a while!  This is how your Pomeranian most likely feels when hear a siren.

What can you do to help?  If you are outside, bring your dog inside.  Whether outside or inside,  do not reprimand your Pomeranian.  This reaction is not due to "bad" behavior.  Reassure your dog that everything is alright.  Talk in a calm voice and gently pat them.   If a siren goes off only every now and then, this is all you should do to help your dog.

If you live in an area that is very noisy with alarms and sirens always going off, you may wish to attempt to train your dog to become somewhat adjusted.

Some dogs will respond well to desensitization training for this issue.  The method behind this type of dog training is to slowly ease your dog into becoming used to an element, in this case: sirens.  You most likely will not be able to train them to remain calm for every siren, however this can definitely help.

You would obtain a small siren.  You have many options, however we have found that using a smoke alarm siren works well. Duck tape is put over the siren where the noise emits.  Therefore, when you press the button to make the alarm go off, it will be at approximately 1/5 of the normal noise volume. Test this before you begin training.  Most importantly, this training will not end with the maximum noise being emitted.  A certain amount of duck tape will always be used.

The owner would sit down with their Pom and press the alarm.  The tone of your voice and your actions must show your Pomeranian that there is nothing to be afraid of. If the dog responds well to the low level siren, you should reward him or her with tons of praise and a doggie treat.

This type of training takes a while.  Work with your dog each day. Slowly increase the noise level every 2 weeks. As time goes by, be in another room and do not allow your dog to know when you will be commencing the training.  Do not, please we repeat do not have the siren at full noise capacity and hold it up to your dog!  This could cause injury to the ear drum.  The idea of this type of dog training is to simply allow your Pomeranian to slowly become accustomed to loud and unexpected noises.

how Dota relates to reality =D

  1. Single-hearted devotion: He is willing to invest a lot of time and effort in pursuing the hobby he loves. In the future, he will be a successful career-minded professional who puts his heart and soul into what he does. Besides, a devoted man is an attractive man. The next time he is concentrating on a DOTA game, take a good look at him, and you may find him attractive in ways you never did notice before.
  2. Indomitable spirit: Every DOTA-er starts from being a newb. Every DOTA player inevitably goes through the long and painful process of feeding and farming only a Boots of Speed and 2 Wraith Bands (not bracers coz too expensive) at 30mins. If he doesn’t have a never-say-die-attitude, he would have given up long ago. So, every DOTA player possess strong will and fighting spirit. And such a man, is of course, more reliable and can be depended upon.
  3. Gentlemanly: A DOTA player is gentlemanly. Even when he gets thrashed badly, he will still say GG (good game) to the opponent at the end of the game. At the most, just try again another day.
  4. Extraordinary patience: DOTA cultivates patience. The opponent might be owning 10 minutes into the game, but a good DOTA player will persevere on and wait patiently for a chance to turn the tables. He will hang on tightly and continue to farm, gank (and sometimes KS if given the opportunity), until he gets the chance to wipe out the opponent team and make the winning push. Similarly in life, you can be sure that he will not PP (pull plug) but will hold your hand and endure the hardships together.
  5. Extremely durable punchbag: Every DOTA-er would surely have been at the mercy of imba magic spells before, those that would make anyone pee in their pants, like Reverse Polarity+ Black hole, a Lion+Lina lane etc, or a Blink+Echo Slam when you are Broodmother pushing with a thousand spiderlings around you. So you can be sure that he makes a good punchbag when you need one, especially on those bad days.
  6. Attentive and sensitive: A good DOTA player an observant one. One of the basic skills of DOTA is to be observant of your surroundings, of every move your opponent makes or is planning to make. Therefore, when he is spending time with you, he will be very sensitive to your feelings. Every frown or smile will not pass by unnoticed. He will lend a listening ear when you are troubled, his shoulder will be there when you need to cry (or are just feeling tired). He will offer words of comfort when you are feeling down. Can you find anyone better?
  7. Lightning reflexes: Another basic requirement of DOTA is to have fast reflexes. Slowpokes are doomed to die in DOTA, because by the time you find the hotkey for Voodoo, you would have been killed by Invoker’s Tornado+Chaos Meteor, possibly followed up by Cold Snap. You don’t need to be as agile as Jet Li to get by in life, but there is no harm in having a partner who can react quickly to real-life situations.
  8. IT-savvy: A DOTA player is more knowledgeable about computers and the net than the average guy. Any DOTA player would be able to talk, at some length, about graphic cards, CPU, mice, keyboards, bandwidth speeds etc. In this day and age, it can be embarassing if your partner is computer-illiterate. With a DOTA player as a spouse, you can be sure that all your kids will grow up to be tech-savvy, capable individuals.
  9. Remarkable mental strength: Constant psychological pressure during DOTA is a norm. You never know when a Nerubian Assasin will pop out from nowhere, annihilating you within seconds. You can never be sure if a Pudge+CM is lying in wait at the secret shop. Hence, you can be assured that the DOTA player will not crumble easily in the face of real-life pressures, because he is so accustomed to handling such circumstances and the hours of DOTA has increased his mental endurance.
  10. Effective planner: If you fail to plan in DOTA, you plan to fail. Rush headlong into a teamfight without planning and you will be waiting for respawn next. A good DOTA player is adept at planning, calculating risks and making judgements. To initiate a gank or not, how to position your character is but some of the many decisions you have to make throughout the game. Thus, the pro DOTA player is a careful and meticulous one. He will plan a party on your birthday, and plan a surprise for your anniversary.
  11. Reliable breadwinner: Money makes the world go round. Farming for gold is of utmost importance in DOTA. Without items, your imba skills at micro/macro management cannot guarantee victory. The long and arduous process of farming for gold (especially reaching that elusive 3800 for a Relic) requires a lot of skill and technique. Hence, rest assured that a pro DOTA-er will always bring home the bacon, and lots of it. The husband earns for you to spend. What more can you ask for?
  12. Faithful partner: DOTA players are loyal lovers. They are able to resist the flaming hot Lina or that sexy Rylai, and mercilessly send them back to where they came from (fountain), despite their charming looks. DOTA players will not be tempted so easily.
  13. Team and community spirit: -Good- DOTA players are self-sacrificing. They always put themselves before others. They have good teamwork, and are willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. They don’t mind letting the team’s main DPS hero get the kill. This kind of person is not self-centred, and will place the family or society above self.
Not all DOTA players may display all the points listed above, but that’s only because you haven’t discovered these attributes yet. Look a little harder, and give yourselves a little more time. You will not regret it.
